One wafer thin mint

Friday, July 20, 2007

So, what the heck is going to happen when the U.S. Dollar Index hits 80? Does anybody know? Should anybody care? Now, even the yen is starting to strengthen against the buck. By most measures, it has a long way to rise - it alone could push the dollar into the 70s.

For some time now, the view held here is that there won't be a currency collapse because it's in no one's interest except for gold bugs - the IMF and central banks around the world will do what is necessary to avoid a "run" on the dollar.

But then again, traders are twitchy lot - a whole new breed of foreign exchange punters have been schooled on late night infomercial study kits and might be ready to pounce when all the technical indicators start flashing as the index hits 80.

Maybe that last quarter point on the U.S. Dollar Index will be like that last wafer thin mint that Mr. Creosote ordered up on the Monty Python classic - The Meaning of Life.

Extra credit will be awarded to anyone who can identify additional similarities between the U.S. Dollar and Mr. Creosote (one is rather obvious) or who can accurately describe the closing scene to this movie.
