Epilogue (For Now)

Just a few items before leaving the topic of Hummers for hopefully a long while.
First, the amount of traffic that the story has generated has been remarkable - buttons have been unwittingly pushed and links have been posted at hundreds of different websites and message boards - you can get a feel for the quantity here.
By the way, as many of you probably know, overfloweth is not a word, even though if you search for it you'll see many uses of it (when last checked there was a link back to this blog in position four).
Hummer Sales
Much of the discussion over the weekend had to do with the actual Hummer sales recently, and that turned out to be a fairly complex topic, what with the introduction of the H3 in May and spotty information available via the internet (note that we fessed up to doing no real research for this article and just based our falling sales/rising inventory theme on the initial H2 sales report and the scene at the dealer storage lot).
The original Yahoo! News article clearly indicated a 52% drop in H2 sales year-over-year, but for the H3 it gets pretty confusing. This article says that H3 sales were 4054 in September, and this article says the H3 sales were 4461 in October, then another article from Automotive News excerpted in the comments section said that the H3 sales were up 120% for the month of October - all three of these pieces of information cannot be correct.
Then there was the confusing 129% increase in total-Hummer sales year-over-year in October, which was the result of introducing the H3 in May and selling a lot more of these at $30K-$40K, than of the H2 at $60K. This article indicates increased production for H3s in Louisiana, while this article talks of GM building inventory as sales fall to try to avoid a supply disruption in the event of a Delphi strike.
All this information, combined with comments from Stuart Brown at Fortune Magazine leads to the conclusion that H2 sales are tanking, but that H3 sales are not. How good H3 sales are is hard to tell - "brisk", "success story", "sales spike" are some of the phrases you hear, but keep in mind that it is relatively new on the market - time will tell.
Even if the H3 sales are great, this is not necessarily a great thing for GM, as pointed out in the comments, because as you see here, the new H3 has entered a market segment already crowded with GM products.
Comments
Over the weekend, on several occasions when catching up on some of the comments that were posted, there developed an overwhelming compulsion to take a shower. Depending on how things go, comments may be shut off for the original post and for this one - we'll see. In the event that they are shut off, the most opinionated commenters are encouraged to start their own blog where the discussion can continue.
A Failed AdSense Strategy
Also pointed out by a commenter, but something that we would have been poked fun at eventually, it is now clear that the advertising strategy employed here to date is fundamentally flawed. The way Google AdSense works is it looks for content on a site, then dynamically provides ads based on this content. Google does not assess the tone of the words, just the words, so when a post contains satire, you are apt to see ads for that which is the subject of the satire.
This didn't stop about a hundred people from clicking on Hummer ads in the last few days.
Inventory
There was some discussion about the exact number of Hummers for sale at this dealer - the number 300 was first offered here, then a dissenting commenter who took it upon himself to drive out to the lots and also do a count said it was 250. Another commenter went to the Thousand Oaks Hummer website and did a query, coming up with a list of Hummers "closer to 400".
As it turns out, the dealer list, which must be presumed to be the most accurate of the three, had a total of 385 Hummers, and it is reproduced below. Neither of the physical counts should be trusted, since in both cases, the counters were surely distracted - by laughter in one case, and probably rage in the other.
(Obviously, since it is now understood that the dealer keeps only ten or so at the showroom, this begs the question of a third remote lot containing somwhere between 75 and 125 more Hummers ...)
Through the wonder of website data queries and Microsoft Excel, just like government economic statistics, if you are handy with a keyboard and mouse it is relatively easy to analyze this inventory data. If anything interesting develops in the coming weeks or months, it will be posted here.

During the weekend I made a sarcastic comment about your Hummer post. I had thought that you ruined a funny story with some weak metaphors and over-generalizations. (I'm definately not pro-Bush or pro-Hummer. I'm just anti-metaphor.)
I returned to your page and read your elaboration on the metaphors along with your other posts. You have done some deeper reading and analysis of economics than I had originally thought, and you clearly don't think Greenspan is single-handedly responsible for every single price and wage change. (Though I agree that the Federal Reserve and just about everyone else in DC foul things up.)
Keep up the good work, and don't let those fugly Hummers get the better of your emotions. :)

Don't foget that Delphi, GM's primary supplier is in bankruptcy and it looks like GM may be building stock in case of a Delphi strike (which will shut down GM). This has been building for about 5 months and will probably occur in December.

I have been a regular reader and poster on this blog.
I am libertarian, and I dislike a lot of the "socialism lite" spin that passes for political commentary on the left these days. This blog is sometimes guilty of that, but it also has a lot of good stuff. I consider that fact that I can't figure out if the author is working for the left or the right to be a plus.
I found the hummer posting to be absolutely hilarious, and I find the comment about it being a metaphor for American consumption habits to be fair political comment. I liked it so much I sent the link to a bunch of my friends.
One point that does need to be made, especially to the free-marketeers who defend it with such vehemence, is that the SUV, of which the hummer is one example, is a product of government regulation.

Why are you suprised that people click on the Hummer ads?
Most of the people visiting are having a bit of fun at the expense of people who drive around in ridiculously large cars. What better way to further the humiliation of the Hummer people than to click on the ads? Then the people who are trying to sell the silly things end up paying the person who is criticising them money.
I found this site after reading the great article about bicycle commuting in LA. I commute by bicycle in the Arctic and my sanity has often been questioned however I have often questioned the sanity of Hummer owners. I was recently on vacation in Kaui where I took my tandem and gave rides to not only my family but also to strangers. When I would sight a Hummer I would ask the person in the back seat, "What's dumber then a Hummer?" The most common answer I received was "I don't know." I would then respond with "Nothing." However one sharp fellow came up with "The owner!"
Notepad's find and replace to swap those dots for commas, and Excel's CSV input makes it very easy to work out... that's $18,921,304 worth of stock sitting in a hotel car-park...

Perhaps the reason this series of blog posts has been contentious is because you're arguing the wrong angle: Clearly the Hummers are sitting in a lot because drivers are catching on that they're freaking ugly! (And if you want to drive ugly, a used Pontiac Aztek is easier to climb into *and* parallel park. Bonus!)
(This theory also explains why the Honda Insight never really got popular, while the less aesthetically-offensive Toyota Prius is so trendy you have to backorder them. Prettiness trumps everything, in the end.)
Great blog - just found it a year late !! Agree that the H2/H3's are ridiculous, but so are many of the other large SUV's and trucks. I think it's wonderful that the collective consciousness in this country is shifting in favor of more fuel efficient vehicles and less waste in general. I know it won't happen overnite, but it's moving in the right direction.
Just please don't lump us H1 owner's in with the other Hummer owners. Of course the H1 is ridiculous for commuting, going to the mall, etc. But I don't know a single H1 owner who uses their vehicle like that - the one's that I know (uh, guess that includes me too) use their vehicles for a variety of off-road work, such as volunteering for the Forest Service (with budget cuts, we help with pulling out abandon vehicles, trail mantenance, etc), County Search and Rescue, and after the appropriate training, become an offical Red Cross Disaster Volunteer, and many are trained First Responders.
Most Hummer H1 owners enjoy using their rigs for what they were designed to do - go just about anywhere other vehicles can not. Last year right after Katrina hit the gulf coast, several owners that are involved with H.O.P.E (Hummer Owners Prepared for Emergencies - affiliated with the Red Cross) donated their time and expenses to shuttle medical personel, food, and water to those in need who were stuck in remote areas or located on devasted highways that regular vehicles could not reach, and help map impassable roads and highways for regular vehicles.
Last week Colrado experienced a severe early snowstorm (10/27/06) and one H1 owner, with traffic control provided by the local police, personally pulled over 200 veicles out of the snow including a snow-plow truck loaded with sand. The lone Prius driver who had slid off the highway with his wife and child did say "thanks" and apologized for being out in such a storm with his family.
Well...all I meant to say was don't hate the H1 owners. Or maybe in a more personal vein, don't hate me. I love my H1 and will keep it around for a long time hopefully. But i do take seriously my responsibilty to use less fuel and just concume less, period.
I am on my 14th year of having a zero commute (I live where I work).
Do the obvious things we all should be doing - recycle as much as possible, WALK (what a concept!) to the grocery store and local farmer's market with my cloth tote bags under arm, group my errands together whnever I do need to drive (not in my H1, just a regular car, or ride my bike or motorcycle when I can), buy as much locally grown food and produce as I can find, etc. It really doesn't take much effort to save a ton, just a little forethought.
I realize that everyone doesn't have the luxury of living where they work, or walking to the store, but is it really neccessary to hop in the car to drive accross town to have dinner at the latest greatest place in your M-B S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Cadillac Escalade, etc.?
And lastly, to help offset my personal carbon footprint, I purchase 38 acres of pristine wooded forest (loaded with lovely mature hardwoods along with some pine and cedar) and had it designated a "greenbelt" status - huge property tax savings as long as it is not developed, which it won't be. I know most people don't have the luxury of buying land that will just sit there doing what trees do best, being beautiful. But making a donation to the Nature Conservancy or the Tree People for example is a step in the right direction. It doesn't take much effort to have a positive impact.
I realize the Hummer is an easy target - but wouldn't limiting in some way "pleasure boating" be more meaningful? How many gallons of fuel are used on Lake Castaic on a given weekend? Plus the fuel used to haul the baots to the water should be considered. Califonia has over 1 million registered boats. The entire production of Hummer H1's in 2006 was 266 vehicles, and several are now using biodeisel.
Someday maybe we could figure out a way to ration fuel and perhaps trade unused credits. It would enable a family to take the trip to Yosemite or the Grand Canyon if they could save their consumption of fuel during the rest of the year (carpooling for example, using public transportation, or just cutting out one local car trip a week). This idea needs some fleshing out, but it could work.
I find it humorous in a way that a friend of mine doesn't see the irony in calling himself an environmentalist yet drives his truck 2 hours each way, every other weekend, to go rock climbing in Joshua Tree. Hey, with a different focus, slight change in attitude, and a little creativity we all can have a huge imapct in the future of this country, of this planet, in a positive way. I've learned it doesn't take much effort at all.
And even though it was slightly annoying last weekend when I got my second "single finger salute" while driving the H1 to the mountains to haul some supplies in for the Forest Service (and haul out some garbage from weekend hikers and campers), I know I am doing my part - consuming less and recycling more.
I just enjoy that the "Grammer police" comment had several spelling mistakes, including the word grammar.
