What to do with the Bryco Post?

Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Oh Dear! Mail came earlier today from the headquarters of Bryco Funding asking if the eighteen month old post about their company - Thank You Bryco! - could be removed.

This appeared back in 2005 around the time that government regulators were first getting about the task of doing something about home equity extraction that had become as easy as picking up a phone and fogging a mirror.

The piece was inspired by transcribed from a TV ad that was happened upon one Sunday morning, and in light of news at that time about changes to home equity lending standards, it was a no-brainer.

It attracted a fair number of comments, clearly not evenly balanced, but both sides were duly represented - a 62-year old grandmother even wrote in to say a few good words about the kind people at Bryco.

Of course a few ex-employees showed up too and had a few unkind thoughts to share, but generally speaking it didn't appear to be doing anyone any harm.

Well, a quick search on Bryco Funding reveals the problem and surely explains the motivation for the correspondence received earlier.

Having just read through the entire post and all the comments, one thing becomes immediately and painfully clear.

No longer using the "royal we" was an excellent mid course adjustment for this blog. It's not clear where that originated - at the time, the use of pluralis majestatis (the majestic plural) to avoid singular pronouns may have seemed like a good thing to do, but in retrospect, it sounds like there was a mouse in my pocket.

Where did that come from?

[Note the use of a single "my" thus far - it's not easy, but it's worth it.]

These days, pronouns are avoided completely if possible, though that makes story telling a bit more difficult. There are a few exceptions where the word "I" is littered throughout a post, but that's more for dramatic effect - a sort of shock to the system where regular readers may notice something different, but not know what it is at first.

There's nothing more annoying to some readers than to constantly hear "I this" and "I that". "I think that he should do this" and "I know that she can do that" - it can be quite annoying to see and read that word over and over.

More than likely, most people write this way naturally because that's the way they speak. But, it looks a little different in print, especially when the word is used over and over.

The fact that my last name starts with that letter makes it all the more awkward here, and at first the "royal we" seemed the perfect solution.

Looking back now, it just sounds a little silly - surely, it was the right thing to do.

Anyway, where were we?

Oh yeah.

It's not clear what should be done with that old post that keeps popping up when Bryco Funding is Googled. In a sense, maybe that's what makes the internet great. The comments for and against Bryco both seem compelling in their own way and perhaps leaves potential customers walking away better informed than they would otherwise be.

On the other hand, this may be affecting the company's bottom line, so maybe strategy sessions have been held where management figures that if they could only get that blog post down, then business would pick up and they won't have to lay off Suzy in accounting.

I (oops!) don't know. What do you think?

I seem to have really overdone it on the mortgage lending posts so far this week - a change of course is promised for tomorrow.

Leave it up -- it's poetic "net justice"

If it were positive, they wouldn't be asking to have you take it down. Instead, they'd be bragging about it. However, they don't hold themselves to a value system that allows for them to be a well run company. I say leave it up. Perhaps it will entice them to start running their business in a manner that would be best for all, and individuals wouldn't be prompted to blog negatively about their negative business.

Tim, you have the right to report the facts and interpret them according to your opinion. I find it offensive that a mortgage corporation would try to hinder you. Please leave the post up. Hopefully they are not threatening you with libel or other such nonsense, but if they do I hope you defend yourself vigorously.

leave it up, especially after reading the comments and because the mortgage bubble is collapsing. people deserve an alternate view.

I'm sure this bug's the hell out of the higher ups.

a post is a post, pretty soon you'd have no analysis on any companies. you'd be doing the opposite of what the blog is intended to do- provide a differeing viewpoint.

would you change the name if greenspan e-mailed you?

IF you want to do something...
and I am not advising that you do.

Perhaps you could hide the old post while leaving it up?

Perhaps you could edit the spelling in the old post but link to it (as you have) from the new post with the proper spelling.

Google will find the new post and only the most curious will track back to the old post.

taking it down wont remove it from cached internet files.........

My vote -- keep it up.

Haha...I wonder how long it will take before this post shows up in the Google results right below the last one.

I wonder if astroturfing by a financial concern is illegal?

If you remove it, I am not coming back to your blog again.

Leave the post up!!
Plus, in the article you mentioned how there were a few people, including a supposed 62-year old grannie, who posted in SUPPORT of Bryco Funding. However, careful evaluation of the date/time logs on the messages that 'support' Bryco will reveal that all four postings were made within the same 20 minute time span. These were obviously web-surfing employees of Bryco who saw the post and decided to try their hand at damage-control. Had they been smarter about it, it might even have worked, but if you checkl out their messages for yourself, you'll see how it takes a fool to be fooled by those scumbags.
Leave the post up - maybe if they do have to fire Suzi, she can find more honest work . . .
. . . at Hooters.

Leave it--there shall be no blogger censoring simply because the subject is unhappy with the coverage. Otherwise, what's the point?

Haha... they are digging themselves deeper -- leave it!!!

I think the blog should stay on!
I am totally disabled, have very little income, and have been taken badly by "Bryco Funding". I think it's only fair that the voice of the people should be heard. We have to see their commercials on TV they should have to see our comments. It helps others make an enlightened judgment from both sides.

I'm sure the corporate types at Bryco thoroughly enjoyed your somewhat self-indulgent discussion of literary styles.

Bravo!

I say let's ban free speech! Take it down! All information from individuals is incorrect. Only information that comes from corporations and the government can be trusted.

Tim,

Can you scan and post their letter? What exactly are they objecting to?

Tim said...

Self-indulgent? Moi?

The correspondence came in the form of an email. I didn't see any reason to post it - basically they asked if I would reconsider hosting that page because of the comments.

Bryco waited a year-and-a-half to complain? Forget it. Leave it up. I (no Royal We here) would even reply to their silly message, reminding them to be grateful that they are not serving time in Federal Prison for what they've done. Yet.

Offer to remove the post...for a fee.

You think they might feel a bit nervous..possibly give the folks the preyed upon their money back?

It is absurd for you to even be thinking of taking it down. First of all, there's the whole freedom of press thing that our country was partly found on. No defamation here, as truth is a defense to it and everything you posted was true. Secondly, these guys are all sleezeballs. I have known probably 10 to 15 guys who have worked there and left. The stories out of this place are ridiculous. They even offered to do a loan for a friend of mine and promised to charge him no points....and tried to sneak in 3 points in the end. And that's how they treat a friend.

New comments have been disabled - everyone has had plenty of time to say what they wanted to say.
