NASA photos of Southern California fires

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

NASA has some excellent photos of the Southern California wildfires at their website - click on the one below to see the giant version.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger just addressed the media - surely the fire crews are doing everything they can though the situation does not seem to be getting any better.

Having lived there for many years, I can attest to the power of the Santa Ana winds at this time of year - usually it just screws up your golf game, but fires are all too common.

For about the fifth time today, I've heard someone ask if there might be any relationship between cratering home prices and the severity of the fires - if there is, given the chaos and the mass evacuations (300,000? 500,000?), it will probably never be known with any certainty.

See Barry's Big Picture blog for additional resources and ways to help.

Every year, the "Santa Anas" blow a harsh, westerly, hot, breeze - people behave in strange ways when those winds blow.

... just heard a report about suspected arson in Orange County.

Dan's link is a good one; I learned in helicopter flight school that this was a type of "katabatic" wind -- and living in a home threatened yesterday in Foothill Ranch, I can tell you those firefighting helicopter pilots have some huge cojones.

Tim's correct that the Orange County fire(s) was (were now that its divided into two or three) definitely arson ... with three different ignition points near each other (the intersection of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads).

I've publicly suggested that this could be a terrorist attack, but have no evidence. Suspicious isn't it that no public agency, pol, or media has spoken of this possibility given the suspicious and sequential nature of many new fires (now over 20 in SoCal) -- other than those caused by nature (downed power lines) or carelessness (construction mishaps) -- far enough away from others to rule out antecedent embers?

Fox News this morning mentioned the possibility that it could be a terrorist attack.

If someone farts too loud, fox news says it could be a terrorist attack.
